Karl Hemfler

Karl Hemfler (born April 16, 1915 in Łódź , Congress Poland ; † April 17, 1995 in Kassel ) was a German lawyer , administrative officer and politician ( SPD ).

Life and work

Hemfler was born the son of a German businessman. After graduating from high school in 1934 at the German grammar school in Łódź , he began studying law at the University of Warsaw , which he interrupted because he was drafted into the armed forces. From 1939 to 1945 he took part in the Second World War as a soldier on the German side .

After the end of the war, Hemfler moved to West Germany and settled in Hesse . Here he continued his studies at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , which he completed in 1949 with the second state examination. From 1949 to 1954 he worked as a judge at the Kassel Regional Court . He then entered the municipal administration.

Political party

Hemfler joined the SPD in 1951. He was initially deputy chairman and in 1969 became national chairman of the working group of social democratic lawyers . During his political career, he campaigned, among other things, for German-Polish understanding.

Hemfler was a member of the Hessian state parliament from 1970 to 1978 .

Public offices

Hemfler worked in the municipal administration of the city of Kassel from 1954 to 1967, first from 1954 to 1963 as a city councilor and then from 1963 to 1967 as mayor and treasurer. From January 1967 to February 1968 he served as State Secretary in the Ministry of Justice and from March 1968 to October 1969 as State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior in the government of the State of Hesse led by Prime Minister Georg-August Zinn . From 1966 to 1968 he was a member of the documenta council for the 4th documenta in 1968 in Kassel . On October 23, 1969, Hemfler was appointed Minister of State for Justice to the state government headed by Prime Minister Albert Osswald , and during his term of office he is particularly committed to combating white-collar crime . Since December 16, 1970, he was also authorized representative of the State of Hesse at the federal government. On December 18, 1974, he left the government and was replaced in his ministerial office by Herbert Günther .
