Gabriele Heinen-Kljajić (born May 28, 1962 in Gemünd ) is a German politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ). From February 19, 2013 to November 22, 2017, she was Lower Saxony's Minister for Science and Culture in Stephan Weil's cabinet .

education and profession

After graduating from high school in 1981, Heinen-Kljajić studied political science , sociology and German at the University of Bonn . From 1990 she was a scholarship holder in the research project arms control in Western Europe of the Volkswagen Foundation and a research assistant at the Universities of Giessen , Frankfurt am Main and Jena . From 1991 to 1992 she was a visiting researcher at the Institut d'Etudes Européennes at the University of Brussels . In 1996 she received her doctorate in political science from the University of Giessen. From 1999 to 2003 she was the district manager of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen in Braunschweig .

Heinen-Kljajić has been a member of Alliance 90 / The Greens since 1994. From 1996 to 2003 she was a councilor for the city of Braunschweig. Since 2003 she has been a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament . From 2008 to 2013 she was deputy chairwoman and from 2010 to 2013 also parliamentary director of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen in the Lower Saxony state parliament. There she was also the spokesperson for science and cultural policy.

At the constituent session of the 17th Lower Saxony State Parliament on February 19, 2013, Gabriele Heinen-Kljajić was sworn in as Minister for Science and Culture. When the red-black state government was sworn in after the state elections in October 2017 , Heinen-Kljajić left office. She had renounced a renewed candidacy for the state parliament.
