Football League First Division 1892/93

The Football League First Division 1893/94 was the sixth season of the highest English football league . It began on September 2, 1893 and ended on April 23, 1894.

Aston Villa won the English championship for the first time in the club's history by six points ahead of defending champions AFC Sunderland . From last year's promoted team Sheffield United and FC Darwen , the Darwen club had to return to the second-rate Second Division after just one year . In addition to this club, Newton Heath was also relegated ; the two clubs should be replaced in the following season by Liverpool FC and Small Heath .

A total of 354 players were used, with Derby County, Sunderland AFC and Wolverhampton Wanderers with 19 the fewest and Darwen FC with 29 the most players in league games. 128 newcomers opposed 135 footballers, who last came into play in the 1893/94 season. 14 players were able to play all 30 league games of their club.

    The Aston Villa championship team

The following list lists all the players who played for Aston Villa in a league game during the 1893/94 season. It must be noted that in English football a minimum number of games is usually required in order to receive the official championship medal. Since there was uncertainty about the specific regulation before the introduction of the Premier League, all players who presumably did not receive a championship medal due to their low contribution were marked with an asterisk (*). The number of missions and the goals scored are given in brackets.

    "Test matches"

Before the automatic promotion and relegation rule between the first-class First Division and the second-rate Second Division, which first came into effect at the end of the 1898/99 season, potential promoters from the Second Division had to prove themselves in play-off- like “test games”. Participation in the game was also dependent on an election procedure of the league association, which had to decide whether a club might participate. Also in the 1893/94 season there were test matches between the three last-placed first division clubs Preston North End, Darwen FC and Newton Heath and the best second division clubs Liverpool FC, Small Heath and Notts County, from which Liverpool FC, Small Heath and Preston North End as the sporting winners emerged and then each secured a majority of the votes of the league association.
