John Baird (born February 20, 1870 in Alexandria , † July 31, 1905 there ) was a Scottish football player . The defender was English champion with Aston Villa in 1894 and was also in the FA Cup final in 1892 .

Career

Baird played in his Scottish homeland Alexandria for the local clubs Vale of Leven Athletic and FC Vale of Leven before moving to England in 1889, where professional football - unlike Scotland - was already allowed. After a brief stint at Aston Villa , he moved to Kidderminster Olympic in mid-1889 , with whom he won the newly founded Birmingham & District League unbeaten . At the end of the season Olympic teamed up with runner-up and local rivals Kidderminster Harriers and took part in the Midland Football League as a fully professional club under the name FC Kidderminster . The team qualified successfully for the main round of the FA Cup , but the audience was not enough to maintain professional play, and so the team was disbanded during the current season in March 1891.

Baird then rejoined Aston Villa , who had their game operations in the Football League . In 1892 Baird was the right runner with Villa in the final of the FA Cup. In the last cup final, which was played at the Kennington Oval , he and his team lost 3-0 after three mistakes by goalkeeper Jimmy Warner, who was suspected of being bribed . In the league succeeded after two fourth places in 1894 winning the championship, Baird had played 29 of 30 games as a defender and formed the defender pair with either Jimmy Welford or James Elliott . After he was only able to book five league appearances for himself in the following season because of the up-and-coming Howard Spencer , he moved to the Second Division at Leicester Fosse . There Baird struggled with injury problems and competed with Harry Davy and Harry Bailey for 13 season appearances. Then Baird returned to Scotland, where he first worked for the Glasgow club FC Clyde and later again for FC Vale of Leven.

In July 1905, Baird died of a heart attack at the age of 35.
