Gisbert Poensgen

Gisbert Poensgen (* July 8, 1923 in Krefeld ; † May 30, 2011 in Berlin ) was a German ambassador , legal scholar and, since 1968, a legal knight of the Order of St. John .

Live and act

After graduating from high school at the former Hindenburg High School in Düsseldorf , Gisbert Poensgen studied economics at the University of Freiburg from 1941 to 1943 . After the war he completed a commercial apprenticeship. In 1947 he began studying law at the University of Tübingen , which he completed in 1949 with the first state examination. Studies in Paris and Denver / USA followed .

In 1951 he joined the Foreign Service and in the following years was abroad in Ankara , Conakry / Guinea and Rabat / Morocco. From 1961 to 1966 he worked as a civil servant in a Commission of the European Communities , then from 1966 to 1974 again in the Foreign Office, most recently as ministerial director. From 1974 to 1977 he was Deputy Head of the Office of the Federal President in Bonn . After serving as Ambassador to Athens (1977–1979), he was appointed Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the European Communities in Brussels from 1979 to 1985 . Finally, he was ambassador to Lisbon from 1985 to 1988 .

From 1989 to 1995 he was a lecturer in European law at the University of Mainz and from 1991 to 1993 he was an advisor to the government and the state president in Riga .

Gisbert Poensgen was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit (1983) and numerous orders from various countries.

He was a member of the Corps Suevia Freiburg and Rhenania Tübingen .

family

Gisbert Poensgen came from the well-known Düsseldorf industrialist family Poensgen , which originated in the Schleiden / Eifel area. His parents were Helmuth Poensgen , member of the board of the " Vereinigte Stahlwerke AG ", and Ursula von Ditfurth (1898–1945), daughter of the King. Prussian Lieutenant General Bodo Borries von Ditfurth . Gisbert Poensgen was married to Veronika Feine (* 1927), daughter of Professor of Law Hans Erich Feine , brother of the diplomat Gerhart Feine . His four children are Ursula (* 1952), Hanfried (* 1954), Joachim (1956–1994) and Gisbert jun. (* 1961).
