From 1997 to 1999 Geue worked as a scientific consultant at the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce , after which he moved to the federal administration. In 2000 he became a member of the SPD. After a year as a consultant in the Federal Ministry of Education and Research , Geue moved to the Federal Chancellery and from 2002 was the personal assistant to the head of the Federal Chancellery, Frank-Walter Steinmeier ( SPD ), and head of political planning. From 2005 to 2009 Geue headed the management area in the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) under Peer Steinbrück (SPD). From 2010 until his appointment as State Secretary, he was a sub-department head responsible for the BMF's investment and privatization policy. From April 20, 2011 to October 31, 2012, Geue was one of the state secretaries in the Finance Ministry of the State of Saxony-Anhalt ( Cabinet Haseloff I ), led by Jens Bullerjahn (SPD ).

On November 1, 2012, Geue was given leave of absence in Saxony-Anhalt and moved back to Berlin, where he managed Steinbrück's election campaign team.

From early 2014 until March 2019 he served as Assistant Secretary of State , the Department 1 (Central Department, engagement policy) at the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs.

In March 2019, Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig appointed him to succeed Peter Bäumer as State Secretary in the Schwerin Ministry of Finance. Geue has been Head of the State Chancellery since May 22, 2019.

Criticism and investigation

Geue came under fire in December 2012 after his announcement that he would lead Peer Steinbrück's election campaign because, despite his declared intention not to return to the service of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, he merely took a leave of absence and thus acquired further pension rights under civil service law . After the legal service of the state parliament also questioned the legality of the leave of absence in an opinion, Geue was put into temporary retirement in March 2013 .

From April 2, 2013, the Magdeburg public prosecutor's office was investigating Geue on suspicion of breach of trust through private use of company cars. He was accused of having put pressure on subordinates and his driver in order to be able to use his company car free of charge for private trips (for example between his place of work in Magdeburg and his main residence in Berlin). Geues employer, Finance Minister Bullerjahn, spoke of a broken relationship of trust. The investigation was closed in February 2014.
