The Berlin Republic was a two-month political magazine close to the SPD that was founded in 1999. It appeared in the Berliner vorwärts Verlagsgesellschaft , the publishing house of the SPD party organ Vorwärts , which is a full subsidiary of the SPD media holding ddvg . The magazine was published by the Verein Berliner Republik e. V. amalgamated active and former social democratic members of the Bundestag . Within the SPD parliamentary group, these members form the Berlin network, which is considered reformist .

According to self-portrayal, the Berlin Republic was a platform for the important socio-political debates of the 21st century, which are progressive and undogmatic . The authors came from science and media, business, politics and society. Many of the authors come from the social-democratic environment, but people who belong to other parties or who are politically neutral also regularly wrote in the debate magazine. International authors often had their say.

Originally the magazine was published by twelve members of parliament, but this group has now grown to around 50 people, including Matthias Platzeck , Peer Steinbrück and Frank-Walter Steinmeier . In the beginning, the MP and trained journalist Hans-Peter Bartels was responsible for the editing. From 2001 to 2017, the former Zeit editor Tobias Dürr took on this role as editor-in-chief. He was supported by the chief editor Michael Miebach, the editorial team and a 15-member editorial advisory board headed by Kai Mühlstädt .

The Berlin Republic organized events on a regular basis . Four times a year, innovation dialogues were held on current progress issues. In addition, there was the summer festival and the short film night during the Christmas season, which was organized exclusively for subscribers to the Berlin Republic .

The magazine's circulation was 10,000 copies. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung called it “a typeface that is respected for its variety of subjects, authors and independence”.

On December 19, 2017, the editors announced on their Facebook page that the newspaper would be discontinued for the time being. "The editors no longer see themselves financially in a position to guarantee the continued publication," said editor-in-chief Dürr and chief editor Miebach.
