Christian Lange (born February 27, 1964 in Saarlouis ) is a German politician ( SPD ). Since 1998 he has been a member of the Bundestag for the Bundestag constituency Backnang - Schwäbisch Gmünd . He has also been Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Minister of Justice and Consumer Protection since 2013 .

Life and work

After graduating from high school in Waiblingen in 1983 , Lange studied law at the University of Tübingen , which he completed in 1989 with the first state examination in law. He then did his community service until 1991 and then began his legal clerkship , which he completed in 1993 with the second state examination in law. From 1993 to 1998, Lange worked for the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economics , initially as a state representative at the federal and federal level, then as a specialist for craft and medium-sized businesses. His post as senior councilor has been suspended since his election to the German Bundestag .

Political party

Christian Lange joined the SPD as a schoolboy in 1982. He has been deputy chairman of the SPD district association in Rems-Murr since 1987 and has also been a member of the state executive committee and presidium of the SPD in Baden-Württemberg since 1991 .

In 1993, Lange ran as a representative of the undogmatic reform socialist Juso current for the office of federal chairman of the Jusos , but could not prevail against the Marxist candidate Thomas Westphal . From 1993 to 1995, Lange was deputy federal chairman of the Jusos in the SPD .

From 1989 to 1999, Lange was a member of the district assembly of the Rems-Murr district, and from 1996 to 1999 he was the chairman of his district assembly.

He has been a member of the German Bundestag since 1998 . From 2002 to 2013 he was spokesman for the Baden-Württemberg regional group in the SPD parliamentary group and from 2002 to 2013 spokesman for the reform-oriented network in Berlin . From 2005 to 2007 he was the deputy spokesman for the parliamentary group “Economy and Technology” and chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in the “ ERP business plans” subcommittee of the Bundestag committee for economics and technology and 2006/2007 SME representative for the craft of the SPD parliamentary group. From 2007 to 2013 he was Parliamentary Managing Director of the SPD parliamentary group. In the Merkel III cabinet from 2013 to 2017, he was already Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection and was reappointed to this office in Merkel IV cabinet in March 2018 . After having been deputy chairman since 1998, he was chairman of the German- Portuguese parliamentary group from 2002 to 2018 and has been a member of the parliamentary group Portugal-Spain since 2018. Since 2006 he has been deputy chairman of the Israel Discussion Group of the SPD parliamentary group.

Christian Lange has always entered the Bundestag via the SPD state list of Baden-Württemberg. His constituency is Backnang - Schwäbisch Gmünd .

Christian Lange is a member of the board of directors of Atlantik-Brücke eV, the advisory board of the Alliance for Democracy and Tolerance and the board of trustees of the Federal President-Theodor-Heuss-Haus foundation .

Other engagement

Lange is Vice President of the German-Israeli Society and Vice President of the German Foundation for International Legal Cooperation . He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Federal President Theodor Heuss House Foundation and a member of the Legal Forum Foundation Board of Trustees . Christian Lange is also a member of the Board of Trustees for the European Church Music Festival in Schwäbisch Gmünd and was the founder and co-editor of the two-month political magazine BERLINER REPUBLIK .

criticism

In October 2019, Lange visited Weleda , a company based in his constituency , which, among other things, produces controversial anthroposophic preparations using homeopathic methods. In a tweet afterwards, he said that homeopathy was “part of good patient care”. He was then massively criticized on social media . Among other things, Kevin Kühnert accused him of positioning himself “in a way that is incomprehensible to me and many others”. It would be “at least helpful to know” on what basis he is arguing and how that relates to the visit to this private company.
