Jan Poerksen

Jan Pörksen (* 1964 ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and political official . Since October 1, 2018, he has been State Councilor and Head of the Hamburg Senate Chancellery under First Mayor Peter Tschentscher ( Senate Tschentscher I ). From March 24, 2011 to September 30, 2018, Poerksen was the State Councilor of the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Family and Integration of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg .

biography

Origin, education and professional career

Pörksen grew up in Lüneburg . He spent a school year in the USA with AFS Intercultural Encounters . After graduating from high school, he studied law at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and as a scholarship holder of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) at the University of Geneva . He then completed his legal clerkship in Hamburg.

After completing his legal clerkship, Poerksen became a civil servant in the Hamburg administration in 1997. From 1998 to 2001 he was personal advisor to Ortwin Runde , first mayor of the Hanseatic city during this time. He later headed several departments in the Hamburg administration before becoming budget director in Bremen in 2006.

Activity as a political official

State Council of the Authority for Labor, Social Affairs, Family and Integration (2011-2018)

With the change of government from CDU to SPD after the state elections in 2011 , Poerksen returned to Hamburg in March 2011 and was appointed to the State Council of the Authority for Labor, Social Affairs, Family and Integration in the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg of the First Mayor Olaf Scholz ( Senate Scholz I ) called. This office he held in the Senate Scholz II and initially in the Senate Tschentscher I .

State Councilor and Head of the Hamburg Senate Chancellery (since 2018)

With effect from October 1, 2018, Poerksen moved to the position of head of the Hamburg Senate Chancellery, also with the rank of State Councilor. He replaced Christoph Krupp , who moved to the board of the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks (BIMA) based in Bonn.

Family and private

Pörksen belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church . He is married to Anke Pörksen , who has been the spokeswoman for the Lower Saxony state government since 2013. The couple has two children.

Political party

Poerksen has been a member of the SPD since his student days . In Hamburg he was chairman of the Hamburg-Eimsbüttel district association for several years until 2008 . As such, he campaigned for Niels Annen's candidacy for the Bundestag . After he was defeated in a controversial vote against the Hamburg Juso chairman Danial Ilkhanipour, Poerksen resigned as district chairman. Since then he has not held any party offices. He is considered a moderate leftist within his party.

Honorary positions

In addition to his honorary posts in the SPD, Poerksen has been involved in various functions at AFS Intercultural Encounters since his student exchange year in the USA. For several years he was deputy chairman of the German association and its representative in several international bodies. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the AFS Foundation for Intercultural Encounters and has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the German AFS since 2012.
