Ilkhanipour became a member of the SPD in 1998 . From 2001 to 2004 Ilkhanipour was a representative in the student parliament of the University of Hamburg. From 2004 to 2007 he was deputy state chairman of the Hamburg Young Socialists , from 2007 to March 2009 their state chairman. In 2004 he became an assessor in the SPD district committee Harvestehude / Rotherbaum and has been deputy chairman since 2018. Bundestag candidacy 2009

The list of Ilkhanipour as SPD candidate for the federal election in 2009 was connected with internal party controversy. Ilkhanipour was elected as a delegate in the SPD Harvestehude-Rotherbaum district in 2008 in order to vote for the previous mandate holder Niels Annen as a renewed direct candidate for the federal election at the district delegate's assembly, but later announced his own candidacy within the deadline set by the district executive. On November 15, 2008, 45 delegates voted for Ilkhanipour as candidate for the Bundestag at the district representative assembly, while Annen had 44 votes. With that, Ilkhanipour was chosen as a direct candidate.

Several SPD members of the Eimsbüttel district challenged the election of Ilkhanipour, as three of the 89 delegates at the district delegates' assembly had not been SPD members for twelve months, as the SPD statutes for elected offices provide. The dispute was rejected by the SPD arbitration commission in December 2008, as the delegate mandate at an electoral assembly was not a party office within the meaning of the statutes.

In the election to the Bundestag on September 27, 2009, Ilkhanipour achieved third place among direct applicants with 23.8% of the first votes, behind Rüdiger Kruse from the CDU (31.3%) and Krista Sager (25.9%) from the Greens .

After the 2009 Bundestag election

In 2011, Ilkhanipour became one of two spokesmen for the newly founded “Liberal Social Democrats”. The inner-party tendency, consisting predominantly of Hamburg SPD members, sees itself in the tradition of the Godesberg program and the social-liberal government policy of Federal Chancellors Willy Brandt and Helmut Schmidt.

In the 2015 election for Hamburg citizenship , Ilkhanipour ran for 57th place on the SPD state list . He was directly elected via the state list and became a member of the 21st Hamburg citizenship . Since 2018 he has been spokesman for his parliamentary group in the Citizenship for Europe and International Affairs.

engagement

Ilkhanipour takes an active part in combating everyday racism and discrimination. For example, he and Michel Abdollahi organized an event on the subject of Where are you from? . For example, he campaigned for a German with a migration background who was not accepted into a fitness studio. Since 2018 he has also been the godfather of his previous school, the Dörpsweg grammar school, as part of the “School without Racism, School with Courage” project.
