The sponge

Installation THE SPONGE before and during the fire

On October 7, 2016, Abdollahi installed an oversized sponge made of original material on the Marco Polo Terrace in Hamburg's HafenCity . According to the artist, the 4 × 2 meter large and approx. 500 kilogram heavy art installation The Sponge should be a symbol against hatred and racism and soak up everything negative. On October 23, 2016, the artwork fell victim to an arson attack and was completely burned. The police check whether there is a political motive behind it. The state security has started the investigation.

In July 2017, Abdollahi installed a similar work of art in front of the City-Galerie Augsburg . This was done as part of several art installations for the Augsburg Peace Festival 2017. Before that, the sponge stood as an art installation against racism and xenophobia four weeks in front of the Stuttgart state parliament. In a short time the work of art was badly damaged by playing children. They had torn large parts out of the sponge and distributed the parts on the square. In a reaction to these events, Abdollahi criticized, among other things, the behavior of the parents of the children playing.

In May 2019, he installed the sponge a third time in Hamburg as part of the celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the Basic Law, together with a digital stele that publicly played the hateful comments that had reached him in response to his previous installations. This time, too, the sponge was destroyed by strangers after a short time. Shortly afterwards, the massive stele was also destroyed. The Hamburg Justice Senator Till Steffen said: "The reaction to such attacks must not be to withdraw, but to confidently claim the public space for yourself, for freedom of expression, artistic freedom and for upholding the values of the Basic Law"
