Sabine Steppat , b. Hennig (born November 6, 1956 in Hamburg ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 2011 to 2015 she was a member of the Hamburg Parliament .

Life

Steppat grew up in the Hamburg districts of Bramfeld and Wellingsbüttel . After graduating from the Peter Petersen School in Wellingsbüttel, she began studying political science , public law and English at the University of Hamburg in 1975 , from which she graduated in 1981. She then completed an additional degree at the European College in Bruges and obtained a diploma in Higher European Studies.

In 1983 Steppat did an internship in the General Secretariat of the European Parliament in Luxembourg . This was followed by work as a research assistant for the MEP Hans-Joachim Seeler and at the Europa-Kolleg Hamburg . From 1988 to 1996 she worked as an editorial assistant in the Hamburg editorial team of the Süddeutsche Zeitung . Since 1996 she has been working as an editor at the portal for political science .

Steppat is married and has two children.

Political career

Steppat has been a member of the SPD since 1980. She is a member of the Niendorf district board and a district and state delegate. In 1984 she was awarded the silver Robert Schuman Medal, and in 1988 she was also awarded the Pro Europa journalism prize of the European Parliament.

Since 2008 she has been a member of the Eimsbüttel district board and the regional board of the working group of social democratic women as well as chairwoman of the working group of social democratic women in the Eimsbüttel district. In the Hamburg state election in 2008 , she ran for the SPD in the Lokstedt-Niendorf-Schnelsen constituency . With 10.2 percent of the vote, she was in fifth place on the constituency list, but did not make it into the citizenry.

In the 2009 European elections , Steppat was Knut Fleckenstein's substitute candidate on position 45, but did not make it into the European Parliament . She is a member of the European Commission of the party executive.

In the state election in Hamburg in 2011 , she ran again in constituency 7. With 6.4 percent of the vote, she was able to enter parliament this time. Since March 7, 2011, she was a member of the Hamburg Parliament . There she was a member of the Committee on Justice, Data Protection and Equality, the European Committee and the Constitutional and District Committee. In the 2015 citizenship election , she ran for 26th place on the SPD state list, but missed re-entry into the citizenship.

On June 18, 2013, she was elected as the first woman to chair the Europa-Union Hamburg.
