Knut Fleckenstein
Knut W. Fleckenstein (born December 20, 1953 in Bad Nauheim ) is a former member of the European Parliament ( SPD ) and was also the foreign policy spokesman for the S&D group in the European Parliament from 2017 to 2019 . Since September 2019 he has been working as a consultant for the consulting company of the lobbyist Ole von Beust .
education and profession
After graduating from high school in Hamburg at Oberalster (1974) Fleckenstein trained as a banker (1976). He gained his first professional experience working in gas import for Deutsche BP. From 1984 to 1989 Fleckenstein was press spokesman and office manager of the Second Mayor of Hamburg, Alfons Pawelczyk, and then took over the management of the department for European affairs and development cooperation in the Senate Chancellery. From 1989 to 1991 he held the post of press spokesman and head of the protocol of the Hamburg citizenship. During this time Fleckenstein got involved in the town twinning between Hamburg and Saint Petersburg . As a member of the management team, he worked for the transport company Hansetrans from 1991 to 1994.
From 1994 to 2009 he was managing director of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund in Hamburg and since October 2010 he has been the federal chairman of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund.
politics
Fleckenstein has been a member of the SPD since 1974. In the mid-1980s he was a member of the Hamburg-Wandsbek district board . From 1988 to 1995 he was a member of the Wandsbek district assembly; he was its chairman in 1994/95. From 1994 to 2004 and from 2007 to 2010 Fleckenstein was a member of the SPD state executive committee in Hamburg as spokesman for culture and European policy. In 2008 he worked as a member of the competence team of mayoral candidate Michael Naumann for the areas of social affairs and health and as a member of the European Commission of the SPD party executive.
European Parliament
Fleckenstein was a member of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2019 .
From 2009 to 2014 Fleckenstein was a member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) and chairman of the EU-Russia Parliamentary Cooperation Committee of the European Parliament. He was also a deputy in the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) and the delegation of the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Cooperation Committee. In July 2014 Fleckenstein was elected deputy group leader of the social democratic group S&D in the European Parliament for two and a half years.
From February 2017, Fleckenstein was the foreign policy spokesman for the S&D parliamentary group in the European Parliament and was a full member of the following committee and delegations in the EU Parliament:
- AFET Committee on Foreign Affairs (APET);
- Delegation to the EU-Russia Parliamentary Cooperation Committee (D-RU);
- Delegation to the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee (D-MD) and
- the delegation to the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly (DEPA).
Fleckenstein was an alternate member in the following committees and delegations in the EU Parliament:
- Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN);
- Delegation to the EU-Serbia Stabilization and Association Parliamentary Committee (D-RS);
- Delegation to the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly (DLAT) and
- Subcommittee on Security and Defense (SEDE).
Private
Fleckenstein has lived in Hamburg for over 50 years. He is married and has two daughters. Fleckenstein has been working as a political advisor for Ole von Beust 's consulting company since September 1, 2019 .
