Christian Gäbler

Christian Gäbler (born November 21, 1964 in Tamsweg ) is an Austrian trauma surgeon and sports traumatologist and specialist in arthroscopy and minimally invasive operations on the knee and shoulder, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of sports injuries.

Christian Gäbler gained public fame for his commitment to the medical care of major sporting events such as the EURO 2008 and the Vienna City Marathon, as a team doctor for the Austrian national team American Football and as a specialist in sports injuries for the Austrian Ministry of Health.

Career

After studying medicine at the University of Vienna (1986–1990) with a doctorate in 1991 and a six-month stay in India and Nepal, Christian Gäbler began his medical work at the I. University Clinic for Trauma Surgery in Vienna. In 1998 he completed his training as a specialist in trauma surgery , followed by research and work stays in the USA and Great Britain. In 1999 he returned to the University Clinic for Trauma Surgery in Vienna and intensified his research here.

Habilitation in trauma surgery in 2001 and sports traumatology as an additive in 2003.

From 2001 to 2007 Christian Gäbler was entrusted with setting up and managing the sports clinic at the University Clinic for Trauma Surgery in Vienna. In addition to his scientific work at the university clinic, he organized the Vienna Future Symposium from 2002 to 2008. From May 2005 to March 2007 he was deputy. Head of the University Clinic for Trauma Surgery in Vienna. During this time he was also responsible for medical care during Austria's EU Council Presidency .

In 2008, Gäbler founded a private sports medicine practice and, as UEFA's Chief Medical Officer, created the medical concept for the care of EURO 2008 in Austria. After the captain of the Italian national team Fabio Cannavaro suffered a severe ankle joint injury , the world champion was operated on by the Italian team doctor Andrea Feretti together with Gäbler.

Christian Gäbler has also worked as an organizer of international congresses and symposia since 2002, as well as the leader and instructor of numerous workshops and symposia on the subject of sports injuries, as well as endoscopic and minimally invasive spinal stabilization.

In 2014, the Center for Sports and Joint Surgery was established in cooperation with the Josefstadt - Confraternität private clinic and the private practice of Gäbler.

Scientific achievements

Christian Gäbler is the first author and co-author of prospective and retrospective studies. He has published 80 original papers in specialist journals and written 300 lectures as a first, co-author and senior author, including in Journal of Trauma, Injury, Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Journal of Hand Surgery, Spine, Trauma Surgeon, etc.

Offices and memberships

Christian Gäbler has been a member of the editorial board and reviewer of the internationally renowned magazine "Injury" since 1999, since 2001 a reviewer for the Journal of Vascular Surgery , since 2003 a member of the advisory board and reviewer for the European Journal of Trauma. From 2003-2008 he was PR officer for the Austrian. Society for Trauma Surgery (ÖGU) and from 2004–2008 head of the “Osteoporosis” working group of the ÖGU. He has been a reviewer for the Journal of Controlled Release since 2004 and a member of the Consultant Board and reviewer for the Journal of European Surgery since 2004.

Christian Gäbler was a board member of the Gerhard Küntscher Circle from 2003–2009 and a board member of the Vienna Medical Academy from 2004–2010.

Gäbler is a member of the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroskcopy (ESSKA), a member of the Society for Arthroscopy and Joint Surgery (AGA), a member of the Society for Orthopedic-Traumatological Sports Medicine (GOTS), a member of the German Society for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery ( DGOOC) and member of the Austrian Society for Trauma Surgery (ÖGU).
