Austrian Society for Trauma Surgery

The Austrian Society for Trauma Surgery eV (ÖGU) is a scientific specialist society based in Vienna that represents the concerns of trauma surgeons in hospitals and in private practice. They care for 2 million patients in Austria every year. The over 1,400 members from 14 countries are specialists in trauma surgery , doctors in training to become specialists and people who deal with trauma surgery topics.

The ÖGU advocated the retention of the special subject trauma surgery as well as the additional subjects of sports traumatology and traumatological intensive care medicine. In addition, it promotes the acquisition and dissemination of specialist, scientific knowledge in the field of trauma surgery. Furthermore, it not only promotes contact among its own members, but also with members of other societies abroad. The ÖGU also represents the concerns of Austrian trauma surgery in all questions of professional politics.

history

The association was founded in 1965 on the occasion of Lorenz Böhler's 80th birthday . The founding fathers were Erich Jonasch and Heinz Kuderna. In 2009 the ÖGU celebrated the anniversary “100 years of trauma surgery in Austria” after the first trauma surgery accident wards (also worldwide) were set up at surgical university clinics in Vienna by decree of Emperor Franz Joseph in 1909.

The most important concerns of the ÖGU include:

  • Ensuring the high quality of care in Austria
  • Retention of the special subject trauma surgery, as there are fears that the training of orthopedics and surgery combined will result in a loss of quality.
  • Improvements in child and small child protection, since a large number of child injuries caused by abuse and violence are wrongly classified and treated as child accidents
  • The migration opportunities for Austrian trauma surgeons within Europe through extended recognition should be improved.
