Andreas Meyer-Landrut
Andreas Meyer-Landrut (born May 31, 1929 in Tallinn , Estonia ) is a former German diplomat . Most recently he was head of the office of the Federal President .
Life
Meyer-Landrut comes from a German-Baltic industrial family who was resettled from Estonia to occupied Poland at the beginning of the Second World War due to the German-Soviet border and friendship treaty. Towards the end of the war, the family fled westward from there and settled in Bielefeld .
After graduating from the Ratsgymnasium Bielefeld , he studied Slavic Studies , Eastern European History and Sociology in Göttingen and Zagreb . In 1954 he was charged with a dissertation on the Croatian theater of the 19th century Dr. phil. PhD .
In 1955 he joined the Foreign Office ; his posts abroad included Brussels , Tokyo and Brazzaville , where he headed the embassies. Due to his language skills, he soon belonged to the Russia specialists in the diplomatic service . He was posted to the German embassy in Moscow five times , most recently from 1980 to 1983 and from 1987 to 1989 as ambassador . He thus played a key role in the rapprochement between the federal government under Helmut Kohl and the Soviet leadership under Mikhail Gorbachev during perestroika . During this time he was particularly committed to the Russian Germans.
From 1984 to 1986 he was State Secretary of the Foreign Office in Bonn under Hans-Dietrich Genscher . From 1989 to 1994 he was a permanent state secretary and head of the office of the Federal President under Richard von Weizsäcker .
After his civil servant career ended, he headed the Moscow representative office of DaimlerChrysler AG until 2002 . He also took over the chairmanship of the German-Russian Forum .
Family and personal life
Andreas Meyer-Landrut is married for the second time. From his first marriage to Hanna Karatsony von Hodos, he has a son and a daughter. He is the uncle of the diplomat Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut and the grandfather of the singer Lena Meyer-Landrut .
Meyer-Landrut lives in Moscow and Berlin.
Meyer-Landrut's great passion is riding. He attended courses including in Warendorf and Wülfrath and was awarded the Silver Reitabzeichen and judges up to Class M . Meyer-Landrut is also involved in the German Equestrian Association . There he was chairman of the personal members division from 1985 to 2001. Since 2001 he has been honorary chairman of the personal members .

- 2002: Great Cross of Merit with a star and shoulder ribbon for his life's work to bring Germans and Russians closer together
