The 1293 by Count Otto III. Ratsgymnasium Bielefeld , founded by Ravensberg as a Latin school, is a grammar school in Bielefeld in the Mitte district .

Location and history

The Ratsgymnasium Bielefeld is the oldest school in Bielefeld. Today's state-run high school goes back to the Latin school of the Marienstift, whose founding document is dated July 14, 1293; the school is expressly mentioned in it. The Ratsgymnasium, which has had this name since 1964, is an old-language grammar school. In the centuries before that, the names "Gymnasium" or "Städtisches Gymnasium" were officially used. The Ratsgymnasium offers Latin as a main subject from the sixth grade, i.e. the 5th grade, while English is also taught from the sixth grade onwards. The school is located on the edge of the historic Bielefeld old town next to the art gallery and its park. The oldest part of today's school building is the Grest'sche Hof , built in the Weser Renaissance style , the core of which dates from the late 13th or early 14th century and on the north side of which a plaque commemorates Franz von Meinders . The school's earliest predecessor building stood on Papenmarkt near the Neustädter Marienkirche on a property that belonged to the monastery freedom. Because the city of Bielefeld was gradually reformed through Lutheran reforms from the 16th century without major struggles, the school has existed without interruption of tradition since 1293. In the 19th and 20th centuries it was assumed that the school was founded in 1558, although this is seen as an attempt can trim the school towards a decidedly Lutheran, Prussian tradition. The school auditorium has an organ and a cycle of paintings by the painter Ernst Hildebrand from that period. The school has a high school library with valuable old stock in its own house.

About 800 students are taught by 70 teachers. There are specialist rooms for the natural sciences, computer science, music and art. Two sports halls are available for physical education. In recent years, the school has developed a focus on the MINT subjects in addition to the old language profile.

The Ratsgymnasium maintains its own school camp on the North Sea island of Langeoog . All pupils of the Ratsgymnasium go to this home twice for about 14 days and once for about seven days during the teaching period. There is also the possibility of spending the holidays with holiday courses or interest groups (e.g. sports, music, theater, alumni) on Langeoog.

The school runs exchange programs with partner schools in Abingdon (England), Gap (France) and Novgorod (Russia). In the upper school, study trips are made to the ancient sites of Greece and Italy, as well as to England and France. Colloquially, the school is also called “Rats” or “RGB”.

Since 1958 there has been a sponsorship relationship with the former Friedrichsschule in Gumbinnen, East Prussia .

Library

The Ratsgymnasium has a grammar school library with a historical inventory. The library of Johann Wilhelm Loebells (1786–1863) , among others, is part of the stock of around 25,000 copies .
