The Friedrichsschule Gumbinnen was a grammar school and a secondary school in Gumbinnen , East Prussia . It was the easternmost high school in Prussia and Germany .

history

The Friedrichsschule emerged from the first school in Gumbinnen, which was built from 1570 to 1580 with the Old Town Lutheran Church. The new building from 1729 was expanded after just two years. As a primary school, it only offered Latin lessons in the prima . Cantor and rector , at the same time officials of the church, lived in the house. From 1740 to 1769 the rector's office was held by the preacher of the Salzburg church .

Johann Friedrich von Domhardt took the urban school system in his hands in 1760 and made significant improvements. His letter to the Russian governor Nikolaus Friedrich von Korff is considered the foundation charter of the Friedrichsschule. It was converted into a Latin school in 1763 and received a new school building, which was handed over to the teaching staff on May 24, 1764. It was named after King Friedrich II and bore the inscription FR (for Fridericus Rex ) on the frontispiece . The school's construction and facilities were considered exemplary. The four classes Quarta , Tertia , Seconda and Prima each comprised two years, the Prima three, so that the institution was completed in nine years. The prima was the rector's class, the second was that of the vice rector , the tertia had a sub-rector , the quarta a cantor . In 1809 the Latin school was converted into a royal provincial school and on August 3, 1813 into a grammar school. Soon it became too small, the old grammar school with the associated property was sold and replaced by a new building, which was inaugurated on July 3, 1903. In 1909 the institution reached its highest level with 594 students. Many high school graduates became members of the Königsberg Corps Littuania and Masovia .

The auditorium received a famous ornament in 1912/13 with the 15 × 8 m fresco by Otto Heichert , which depicted the relationship between Friedrich Wilhelm I and the Salzburg exiles . In 1938/39 the Friedrichsschule was enlarged by an extension. In 1958 the Ratsgymnasium Bielefeld sponsored the school.

secondary school

The municipal Realschule from 1865 had been a full-time Realprogymnasium since 1883. On April 1, 1893, the six-year conversion to a secondary school without Latin began. The number of students rose from 190 in 1865 to around 300 by 1904, when they moved into the new high school building on April 1. Half of the students from abroad came not only from Gumbinnen and the neighboring districts , but also from the neighboring Tsarism of Russia , from St. Petersburg from Białystok . The Russification efforts in the Baltic Governments prompted many parents to send their children to East Prussian schools. Between 1924 and 1927, the secondary school was expanded into an upper secondary school, which was also attended by girls until 1932.
