Otto Barkowski

Otto Barkowski (born July 9, 1890 in Aken (Elbe) ; † spring 1945 near Graudenz [missing]) was a German regional historian and high school teacher.

Life

Otto Barkowski came from a Prussian family. His grandfather was a train driver in the Niederung district and in Breslau . His father Bruno Barkowski worked as a teacher in various cities. Otto Barkowski grew up in Aken (Elbe) , Jülich , Treptow an der Rega and Bartenstein in East Prussia (from 1896). He attended high school from 1897 to 1908 to Bartenstein and studied classical philology and history at the universities of Jena , Freiburg and University of Königsberg , where he in 1912 when Richard Wünsch to Dr. phil. received his doctorate and passed the teaching examination in 1913.

After the seminar year in Insterburg (1913/1914) and the trial year in Bartenstein (1914/1915), Barkowski took part in the First World War until 1919 . As a member of the 1st Masurian Infantry Regiment No. 146 , he received several awards, including the Iron Crescent of the Ottoman Empire .

Retired from military service as a reserve lieutenant at the end of the war, from April 1919 Barkowski worked as a study assistant at the Bartenstein high school. After a year he switched to the Friedrichsschule Gumbinnen as a teacher . In 1937 he was transferred to the Gymnasium zu Deutsch Eylau . With the outbreak of World War II (1939), Barkowski was drafted as captain of the reserve to attack Poland . After a few weeks he was badly wounded near Modlin and released back home. He continued his work at the grammar school until he was called up for the Volkssturm in April 1945 . He was last seen with the wounded in Graudenz, since then he has been considered missing.

In addition to his work in school service, Barkowski was scientifically active. His doctoral thesis was an annotated edition of the late antique carmen adversus Flavianum . From this work grew his collaboration with Wilhelm Kroll , who published the real encyclopedia of classical antiquity . During his time in the field, Barkowski wrote several articles on his behalf. The longest dealt with the Seven Wise Men and appeared in 1923.

During his work in the Prussian school service, Barkowski dealt with the local history of the settlement and locality. He published extensive and in-depth studies in various professional journals. He was a member of the Prussia antiquity society and from 1940 a member of the research group of the Königsberg Albertus University.
