history

Until 1945

The association “Alterthumsgesellschaft Prussia” was founded in 1844 on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the Albertus University under the decisive initiative of Ernst August Hagen , the first professor of art history and aesthetics in Prussia, and existed until 1945. Hagen was also the first chairman and did research collected over decades regarding finds and history of the Prussians. He wanted to secure the traces of the Prussians and their predecessors. Early and prehistoric archeology was in the foreground for more than four decades. The excavation finds were kept in the Prussia Museum in Königsberg. From 1888 the history of the religious order and research into modern times came to the fore. West Prussia was also looked after.

The research results were published in the annual reports of the association and the museum as well as in the magazine Prussia , which appeared from 1874 to 1943 with changing subtitles:

  • 1874-1901: Prussia. Meeting reports of the Prussia antiquity society
  • 1902-1924: Prussia. Meeting reports of the ancient society Prussia
  • 1926-1927: Prussia. Journal of the Prussia Ancient Society
  • 1928-1938: Prussia. Journal for local history and homeland security
  • 1939-1943: Prussia. Journal for local history

Re-established in 1972

A circle of eight East Prussians around Erich Grimoni re- founded the society in 1972 under the name Prussia, Gesellschaft für Heimatkunde Ost- und Westpreußens eV (proper spelling: PRUSSIA). Their primary concern was to continue "to make the cultural achievements of Old Prussia visible to the public", to track down and collect scattered cultural assets and to promote scientific work. In lecture events, in exhibitions, in building a library and by publishing a series of publications, the new Prussia has had a national and international impact in this sense and is a recognized contact partner. It also works with people and institutions from other countries who are aware of the region's German past and are committed to preserving the cultural assets that testify to it.

This also means presenting the overall embedding of Old Prussia as well as East and West Prussia in the historical context up to the present using available materials from the Prussia Collection and Library at home and abroad. In this sense, the association sees itself as a central point that conveys knowledge about the cultural products of Old Prussia that still exist with the aim of keeping the cultural achievements of the German East alive in the consciousness of the next generation.

Hans-Jörg Froese has been running the company since June 26, 2010. He replaced Günter Brilla.

The general meeting decided on March 24, 2012 to amend the statutes, thereby changing the name of the association to "PRUSSIA, Society for History and Regional Studies of East and West Prussia eV". The association specified its task in conveying, making visible and maintaining the cultural achievements of Old Prussia as part of the culture of Germany and Europe, as well as promoting the study of the history and regional studies of Old Prussia. The European idea was taken up for the first time.
