Paul Stettiner (born September 7, 1862 in Königsberg i. Pr. , † September 20, 1941 ibid) was a German teacher, historian, classical philologist and cultural politician in the provincial capital of East Prussia, Königsberg.

Life

Stettiner came from a Jewish family in East Prussia who had converted to the Protestant faith in the 19th century . At the old town high school , he passed the Abitur in 1880. Stettiner first studied ancient languages , history and geography at the Albertus University in Königsberg . There he was a member of the Hohenstaufen Scientific Association in the German Association of Scientists . He moved to the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen and the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . In 1885 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD . In 1886 he passed the exam pro facultate docendi .

From 1887 he was an assistant teacher in Szczecin and from 1893 he was a senior teacher at the Löbenichtschen Realgymnasium . 1906 he was the professor title and rank of Council 4th grade (equivalent to about Government awarded). In 1910 he was appointed to the City School Council of Königsberg. It was thanks to him that the school system took off and in 1924 the private girls' schools came under municipal administration. When he reached the age limit, he retired in the summer of 1928. Erhard Roß followed him as the city school councilor . As a city ​​elder he remained connected to the communal and cultural life of Königsberg in numerous honorary positions . In 1933 they were taken from him because he was Jewish . Forced to wear the Jewish star in 1941 , he put an end to his life. He held Kant's works in his hands . He was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Berlin-Weißensee .

In 1923 he was a founding member of the Historical Commission for East and West Prussian State Research . The youth hostel in Rossitten was named after him.

politics

Stettiner was involved in the Prussia antiquity society , built the Königsberg zoo and was the soul of the association for increasing tourism . He was a founding member of the Historical Commission for East and West Prussian State Research . Most of the cultural institutions in the capital of the province of East Prussia were created or supported by Stettiner's initiative: Adult Education Center, Königsberg City Library , City History Museum , Königsberg City Theater , sports fields, baths and youth hostels. He knew how to put the right man in the right place. He was close friends with Alexander Wyneken , the editor of the highly respected Königsberger Allgemeine Zeitung . He wrote a lot about the history of Prussia and the Albertus University.

Since 1914, member of the Progressive People's Party , he turned to the First World War, the German People's Party to whose provincial president he became. From 1919 to 1925 he was a member of the East Prussian Provincial Parliament and in 1932/33 a member of the Prussian State Council .
