history

When the city administration moved to the new town hall in 1927 and the town hall in Kneiphof became vacant, the painter Eduard Anderson initiated a city history museum. It was opened in 1928 with 25 rooms. Based on the Kantiana kept in the Königsberg City Library , it also contained a Kant Museum since 1938. The museum owned portraits of Johann Georg Hamann and August Wilhelm Heidemann , a bust by ETA Hoffmann , a coin collection and valuable ceilings from Königsberg houses, plus the flag of the East Prussian National Cavalry Regiment , a Viking sword , old copper engravings , household items and much more. Anderson gave his "inspiring lectures" in the museum. The directors of the museum were Anderson (from 1927) and Fritz Gause (from 1938). The stocks burned during the British air raids on Königsberg in August 1944. Preserved items were kept by the Museum City of Königsberg . When the Duisburg Museum was given up, it was moved to the East Prussian State Museum in Lüneburg.
