Wilhelm Matull

Wilhelm Matull (born May 28, 1903 in Königsberg i. Pr. , † August 24, 1985 in Düsseldorf ) was a German journalist and historian . As a civil servant he was active in political education .

Life

Matull graduated from high school in Königsberg in 1923 and then studied history, German, musicology and education at the Albertus University of Königsberg and the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich until 1928 . He joined the SPD in 1923 and in 1925 became chairman of the socialist youth workers in Königsberg. 1928–1933 he worked as an art critic and editor for the party's own Königsberger Volkszeitung . The time of National Socialism brought him persecution and employment with the East German Railway and the Schichau Works . From 1946 to 1954 he was in charge of the management of the Volkshochschule Hannover. Then he was director of the state center for political education in Lower Saxony for two years. In 1956/57 he worked at the Federal Agency for Political Education in Bonn, then until 1968 at the State Agency for Political Education in Düsseldorf, most recently as a ministerial advisor.

As an author and editor, Matull emerged with historical research on the East German labor movement and East Prussian memory books.
