Work on witch hunt and rehabilitation of victims of the witch trials

Since 2000, stimulated by questions from schoolgirls, Hegeler has been concerned with the subject of witch trials and the possible rehabilitation of victims who were convicted by secular courts (not by trials under canon law). In 2000 he founded the Witch Persecution Working Group in Westphalia , which was renamed the Witch Trials Working Group in 2005 .

As part of this working group, Hegeler developed numerous activities: He gives lectures in academies, adult education centers, schools and parishes, participates in exhibitions on the persecution of witches and the life of Anton Praetorius and organizes further training for teachers on the subject of witch persecution. Hegeler has presented numerous publications on these topics and his activities have attracted wide media coverage.

Many places have taken up his suggestion to commemorate Pastor Anton Praetorius , fighter against torture and the persecution of witches. Hegeler organized the Ecumenical Church Conference in Berlin 2003 and the Evangelical Church Conference in Hanover 2005, Cologne 2007, Dresden 2011 and Hamburg 2013, Stuttgart 2015, Berlin 2017, Dortmund 2019 as well as the Catholic Days Osnabrück 2008, Mannheim 2012, Regensburg 2014, and Münster 2018 together with the Friedrich-Spee-Gesellschaft Ratingen information stands.

At the second Ecumenical Church Congress in Munich in 2010 , Hegeler and the Witch Trials working group held a service in memory of the victims of the witch trials.

Historical research

For the history of his hometown Unna , Hegeler researches the introduction of the Reformation , the history of the Unna town church and the gravestones in the nave. Since 2020, Hegeler has been involved in organizing the series of lectures of the SGV and Heimatverein Unna.
