Dietwulf Baatz (born January 20, 1928 in Kolberg ; † November 23, 2021 ) was a German provincial Roman archaeologist .

Life

Dietwulf Baatz first studied mathematics, physics and philosophy in Frankfurt am Main and Marburg . He then turned to archeology and was born in 1959 at the University of Marburg with a dissertation on the subject of Mogontiacum . Doctoral thesis at the Roman legionary camp in Mainz . In 1960/61 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute (DAI). In 1966 he succeeded Hans Schönberger as director of the Saalburg Museum , which he managed until his retirement in 1993. Baatz was a full member of the DAI, an internationally recognized expert in Limes researchand published, among other things, the Saalburg yearbook .

His publication on Fort Hesselbach on the Odenwald Limes was particularly groundbreaking . The complete uncovering of the interior of a numerus fort allowed the analogue reconstruction of many other forts of this type. In addition, the typology of ceramic shapes from the 2nd century AD from Hesselbach is an important tool. Numerous forms of coarse and fine ceramics from this time are named after Hesselbach. His archaeological guide to the Limes in Germany, first published in 1974 as the successor to the Limes guide by Wilhelm Schleiermacher from 1959, was published in a fourth revised edition in 2000. His concise descriptions of archaeological findings are not only valued in specialist circles, they also enabled numerous laypeople to get started in Limes research.

In 1982 the first edition of the overview work The Romans in Hesse appeared , to which Baatz contributed most of the articles in addition to being the editor. More recently, he had dealt more and more with the history of technology, such as Roman mill technology and research into weapons technology. Baatz had been honorary professor at the Institute for Archaeological Sciences (Department II: Archeology and History of the Roman Provinces ) at the University of Frankfurt since 1981 . Baatz has been a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London since 1997, and of the Historical Commission for Hesse since 1982 .
