Ebrechtella tricuspidata ( Syn. Misumenops tricuspidatus ) is a species of spider from the family of the crab spider (Thomisidae) and in Europe the only species of the genus Ebrechtella . The species iswidespreadin Central Europe , but not very common.

features

The species is one of the medium-sized crab spiders, but the females are comparatively conspicuous due to their large, spherical abdomen. Males have a body length of about 3 mm, females reach 6 mm.

The front body ( prosoma ) and the legs of the female are monochrome grass-green, the rear part ( opisthosoma ) is almost monochrome whitish yellow and only shows a two-part reddish mark on the back. This consists of two broad, dark red bands that are connected at the back and open at the front, which extend symmetrically from the spinnerets to about the middle of the back, and a light red, elongated spot, usually interrupted in the middle, which extends from the front to about the middle of the back the middle of the two longitudinal ligaments pulls and usually tapers to a point there.

In males, which look significantly different, the prosoma shows broad brown longitudinal ligaments on the upper side, the middle is light. The legs are broad, light-dark ringed. The back of the body has the same markings as the female, but is generally darker brownish or greenish. In Central Europe the species is unmistakable.

distribution and habitat

Ebrechtella tricuspidata colonizes the Palearctic . The species is more common in Europe in the east and south and is absent in Scandinavia and Great Britain . In Germany, too, the species is already absent in the northwest.

The species loves warmth and moisture and lives mainly on sunny forest edges near water. It stays there mainly on bushes and in tree tops.

Way of life and reproduction

Sexually mature animals are found from May to July. The species hunts for flowers and leaves. The egg cocoon is laid out and guarded in a rolled sheet in summer.

Danger

The species is widespread and rare to medium abundant in suitable habitats. In Germany it is classified as "safe" in the Red List .
