Cologne High Heer and Escort Road
The Cölnische Hohe Heer- und Geleitstrasse , also known as Hohe Strasse , is a historic trade route that led from Cologne via the imperial cities of Wetzlar and Friedberg to Frankfurt am Main .
This old road led along the eastern edge of the Westerwald via Greifenstein and crossed the Lahn in Wetzlar. In addition to its function as a trade route, this route was used as a pilgrimage route from Cologne to Marburg . The so-called Elisabethpfad had the grave of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia in Marburg as its destination. This historic pilgrimage route was marked as the Way of St. James in 2007 . The section of the Altstraße between Butzbach and Wetzlar is mentioned in documents 1315 and 1349 in the Arnsburg documents No. 441 and No. 758.
