Christian Daniel Vogel (born January 20, 1789 in Neuhütte , † July 29, 1852 in Kirberg ) was a German historian, topographer and pastor in the Duchy of Nassau.

Life

Johanette born Schnabelius

He was born the son of the chief forester Ludwig Vogel. After attending the Latin school in Dillenburg , he began studying Protestant theology at the Herborn High School , which he finished in 1812. After completing his studies, Vogel was given a position as vicar in Ballersbach . This was followed by a transfer to Liebenscheid (1813). Here Vogel married the pastor's daughter Johannette Wilhelmine Schnabelius on November 17, 1813 (* December 8, 1795 in Marienberg; † February 12, 1866 in Wiesbaden). In the following years several transfers to parish posts followed in Marienberg (1815), Schönbach (1828) and finally Kirberg (1831) where he worked for over 20 years. The rectory in Kirberg was Vogel's most important place of residence and work. In 1838 he became dean and in 1849 he was appointed inspector of Protestant schools in the Kirberg office . The sculptor Reinhard Berthold Vogel (1821–1876) was a son. His brother was Friedrich Christian Vogel , pastor in Feudingen , who was a son-in-law of the hut manager and owner Johann Jakob Jung .

historian

During his studies, Vogel published his first contributions on the national and church history of Nassau. He was also in close contact with the writer Karl Hartwig Gregor von Meusebach and the civil servant and historian Johannes von Arnoldi in neighboring Dillenburg. On the recommendation of Johannes von Arnoldi, Vogel participated in the preparation of the General Encyclopedia of Sciences and Arts . In March 1817 Vogel began to describe the Duchy of Nassau, a comprehensive description of the country based on the description of the Electoral Palatinate by Johann Goswin Widder . He published his work on church history in 1818 in the first and only volume of the archive of the history of churches and scholars in Nassau . In 1826 he published an edition of the Limburg Chronicle by Tilemann Elhen von Wolfhagen with explanations and comments.

A year later in 1827 he was appointed to a historical commission of the Duchy of Nassau . The aim of the commission was to research the history of the land and house of Nassau . The director of the Nassau State Library, Johannes Weitzel, was in charge of the commission . Another member was Friedrich Gustav Habel . However, the goal was not achieved and work stopped in 1829. Vogel then continued his work alone and published the topography of the Duchy of Nassau in 1836 . A second redesigned and expanded edition appeared in 1843 as a description of the Duchy of Nassau , in which it deals with the natural composition, the historical development and the "current state" of the country. Vogel joined the Nassau Classical and Historical Research Association in December 1821 shortly after it was formally constituted. In 1833 he was elected to its board. Due to differences with Friedrich Gustav Habel, however, he temporarily resigned from the association in 1837. He finally left the association around 1850/51. Vogel has written several articles for the Nassau Annals.
