history

Schönbach was first mentioned in a document in 1239. The first pastor is mentioned as early as 1283 . A fortified church was built on a small hill in the village . It was surrounded by an enclosure wall and a barn wreath . The von Schönbachs, as local nobles, had a small aristocratic residence. It became a Nassau-Dillenburg domain in 1627. In the 19th century, mining was carried out on copper and, more sustainably, on iron ore . In 1906 a rail connection came into the place.

From 1906 to 1984, Schönbach had a direct rail connection in passenger and freight traffic through the Herborn – Montabaur (Westerwaldquerbahn) railway line , which has been closed and largely dismantled.
