Merkenbach is a district of Herborn in the Lahn-Dill district in Central Hesse .
Geographical location
Merkenbach is located south of the city center. The federal motorway 45 runs north . The state road 3046, which runs in the southern area of the village, meets the A 45 and the federal road 277 at the Herborn-Süd junction .
history
The place was first mentioned in 1286. The nobles of Dernbach owned a farm here at that time .
In the 19th century mining began in the place . It was hoped to be able to mine gold and silver. A lead ore mine in the Rehbachtal called "Goldhütte" is the most famous mine . A machine wool spinning mill was set up in 1827 and at the end of the 19th century the Berkenhoff family founded a wire factory that still exists today in its modern form.
Territorial reform
In the course of administrative reform in Hesse on 1 January 1977, the previously independent municipality Merkenbach were, the city Herborn and other previously independent municipalities by the law on the restructuring of Dill circle counties Giessen and Wetzlar and the city of casting the new city Herborn together . For the Merkenbach district, as for the other incorporated, formerly independent municipalities, a local district with a local advisory board and local councilor was set up.

politics
Merkenbach has a local advisory board with a local mayor . The local advisory board consists of seven members. After the local elections in Hesse in 2016 , Peter Henss was confirmed as mayor. After his retirement from office in January 2018, Dieter Freitag is the mayor.
Culture and sights
Merkenbach's landmark has been the approx. 35 meter high and 5.5 meter wide water tower on the Katzenstein, which is part of the Rehbachtal hydropower plant , since 1930 . It is part of the logos of some local associations, such as B. of FC Wacker 1921 Merkenbach e. V. or the fire brigade club Merkenbach e. V.

On November 5th Merkenbach presented itself as “Dolles Dorf” in the Hessian broadcasting competition of the same name.
