Friedrich Kofler

Friedrich Kofler (also: Fritz Kofler; * 1830 in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe ; † 1910 ) was a German archaeologist , old road researcher and route commissioner for the Reich Limes Commission (RLK).

life and work

As route commissioner of the Imperial Limes Commission, Kofler was responsible for the discovery, excavation and investigation of a large number of former Roman forts . These include the castles Langenhain , Butzbach , Arnsburg , Echzell , Ober-Florstadt , Lützelbach , Hainhaus , Eulbach , Würzberg and Hesselbach . His interpretations of the excavation dimensions and findings are often the basis for today's modern provincial Roman archeology .

Kofler is known for his three-volume work Alte Strassen in Hessen , published in Trier between 1895 and 1902 , which is regarded as the standard work for old roads and paths in Hessen in the field of old road research. The archaeological map of the Grand Duchy of Hesse that he created is a work that is often cited in regional research and was groundbreaking in landscape archeology . Later works by Georg Wolff and Karl Schumacher were strongly based on Kofler.
