Helmut Schlichtherle

Helmut Schlichtherle (* 1950 ) is a German underwater archaeologist with a focus on pile dwellings and a monument conservator from Baden-Württemberg .

Life

Helmut Schlichtherle studied prehistory and early history , paleontology and botany at the Universities of Tübingen , Göttingen and Freiburg . In 1973 he was involved in the exploration of the Neolithic settlement of Hornstaad Hörnle. In 1979 he was with a dissertation on a topic to Neolithic lakeside settlements on Lake Constance doctorate .

His first job led him to the Baden-Württemberg State Monuments Office . Since then he has carried out projects to explore prehistoric pile dwellings as a consultant and has led numerous excavations on Lake Constance and in the Upper Swabian Lake District. The work resulted in the establishment of the "Hemmenhofen Workplace". The office in Hemmenhofen , part of the municipality of Gaienhofen , in the district of Konstanz, serves as the base of operations for underwater archeology on Lake Constance and for peatland archeology in Upper Swabia , includes several scientific laboratories and, with a team of archaeologists and natural scientists, pursues settlement archeological issues.

In 1997 Schlichtherle was appointed head of the “Underwater Archeology” section of the Baden-Württemberg State Monuments Office. Since the administrative reform in 2005 and the reorganization of the preservation of monuments, he has been the head of the "Underwater and Wet Soil Archeology" department in the newly established State Office for Monument Preservation in the Stuttgart Regional Council . His tasks include the execution of rescue excavations in the inland waters of southwest Germany, the planning of reserves and the coordination of research projects.

He is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute and a member of the “Underwater Heritage Management” working group in the Europae Archaeologiae Consilium (EAC) .
