Gunter Schöbel (born July 15, 1959 in Stuttgart ) is a German archaeologist and museum director.

Life

Gunter Schöbel was born in Stuttgart in 1959. From 1975 he worked in the archaeological preservation of Baden-Württemberg . From 1979 to 1982 he studied prehistory and early history , with the minor subjects anthropology and geology at the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen . From 1982 to 1989 he continued his studies at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg , with minors in anthropology, geology and anthropology , where he in 1989 with the theme "The Late Bronze Age on the northwestern Bodensee - Diving Archaeological investigations in Hagnau and Unteruhldingen" doctorate . At the same time he worked from 1982 to 1990 as a diving archaeologist at the Baden-Württemberg State Monuments Office . Since 1990 Schöbel was the scientific director of the Pfahlbaumuseum Unteruhldingen with the Research Institute for Prehistory Unteruhldingen on Lake Constance . In 1994 he was appointed director of the Pfahlbaumuseum Unteruhldingen. In 2010 Schöbel completed his habilitation at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen on the subject of "Genesis, status and perspectives of archaeological open-air museums in the field of tension between science and the public at the beginning of the 21st century in Germany / Europe", where he worked as a private lecturer with venia legendi for the elderly and More recent prehistory and archeology of the Middle Ages was active. Gunter Schöbel is a founding and ex-board member (2003–2009) of the Association of Worldwide Archaeological Open Air Museums and Experimental Archeology (EXARC), which was founded in 2001. Since 2008 he has been the first chairman of the European Association for the Promotion of Experimental Archeology (EXAR) , since October 2014 he has been the deputy chairman of the West and South German Association for Antiquity Research (WSVA) and since 2016 he has been an extended board member of the German Association for Archeology ( DVA) was entrusted with the organization of a specialist group “ Archeology and Schools ”, which, together with the educational bodies, should work to improve school teaching in the federal states.

Gunter Schöbel's scientific focus is on the archeology of the Neolithic and Bronze Age , archeology of the pile dwellings on the lakes and moors, experimental archeology , scientific research methods in archeology, archaeological open-air museums, museology , museum studies, exhibition didactics , museum education and the research history of archeology.
