Hemmenhofen is a district of the municipality of Gaienhofen in the district of Konstanz in Baden-Württemberg .

Geographical location

The place is on the northern bank of the Untersee , the western part of Lake Constance , in the south of the Höri peninsula .

history

Hemmenhofen was first mentioned as Hemminhovun in the year 882 in a list of goods from the St. Gallen monastery . However, it is believed that the settlement has existed since the 7th century.

In the 12th century, the place came into the possession of the Allerheiligen monastery in Schaffhausen (mentioned in the list of goods in 1150). In 1282 it was bought by the Feldbach Cistercian convent in Steckborn , on the opposite side of the Untersee in what is now the Swiss canton of Thurgau .

In 1804 Hemmenhofen, which had previously formed a Swiss exclave, was incorporated into the House of Habsburg . In 1806 it came to Württemberg and in 1810 to the Grand Duchy of Baden .

In the 1930s and 1940s, Hemmenhofen became a place of retreat for important artists who were defamed as " degenerate " by the National Socialists . Painters such as Max Ackermann , Curth Georg Becker , Otto Dix , Erich Heckel , Walter Herzger and Helmuth Macke lived and worked here.

Hemmenhofen's status as an independent municipality ended on October 1, 1974 when it was incorporated into today's municipality of Gaienhofen.

Today the former fishing village has the largest number of beds in the Gaienhofen community. The branch of the State Office for Monument Preservation is located in Hemmenhofen , which researches the excavations of the pile dwellings of Hornstaad-Hörnle , which have been on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2011 as part of the prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps .
