The Museum Römerhaus Walheim is a branch of the Archaeological State Museum Baden-Württemberg in Walheim in the Ludwigsburg district ( Baden-Württemberg ).

museum

The museum houses a Roman strip house that has been completely preserved in its foundation walls and is considered to be the best preserved building of its kind north of the Alps. During the rescue excavations, which lasted from 1980 to 1988 due to the construction of a bypass in Walheim, numerous buildings were discovered, including the all-stone strip house, which had a cellar and a living room equipped with underfloor heating. In order to preserve this find and make it accessible to the public, a shelter was built and opened in 1991 as the "Museum Römerhaus Walheim". In this and the small outdoor area, in addition to the foundation walls themselves, numerous other important finds are exhibited. The museum is operated by the municipality of Walheim together with the Förderverein Römerhaus Walheim eV.

The Roman trading house

The building, which was discovered in 1986 and was particularly large at 48 × 14 m, was probably two-story; it can be dated to about AD 160. Due to its size and the existing underfloor heating ( hypocaust heating ) it probably belonged to a wealthy owner. This is also suggested by some other finds. The building consists of a large hall, which is oriented towards what was then the main street, could be entered through three large gates and probably served as a sales room or workshop. In the back of the house there were living rooms such as a kitchen, a stable and the particularly well-preserved cellar.

basement, cellar

The cellar, which was presumably used to store perishable goods, could be reached via a wooden staircase from the large hall and has a small adjoining room. A completely preserved stone table was found in it, which was put back in the basement, probably in its original place.
