The Schottenkapelle in spring

The Schottenkapelle St. Jakob is a Catholic former cemetery chapel from 1589 on the edge of Schottenplatz and near the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium in Konstanz . The building is listed.

history

The buildings and church of the Irish monks ("Scoti") on the site of the former Scottish monastery of St. Jacob from 1142 had already become dilapidated in the 15th century and were demolished during the Reformation in Constance. The Schottenkapelle was rebuilt as a cemetery chapel in 1589 for the burial ground that had existed since 1541 by a resolution of the City Council of Konstanz . From 1784 to 1870 the "Friedhof zu den Schotten" was the cemetery for Constance. Due to the opening of the new main cemetery in Konstanz on the right bank of the Rhine , the Schottenfriedhof was abandoned and the graves leveled because of the construction of the Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium and its gym.

Renovations

Because of its non-use and dilapidation, the building, which had been threatened with demolition several times, was renovated from 1974 to 1980 by Vincentius-Haus-AG, which had acquired the site, and handed over to the entire Catholic parish of Konstanz. This then carried out the interior renovation.

In the interior there are several wall paintings from 1733. The stained glass windows were created by Albert Birkle in 1980. A wooden Jakobus by Brigitta Hemmer dates from 1994.

Another renovation by the Catholic parish is planned (as of April 2015).

Church use

Youth services are held monthly. The main Sunday service of the Evangelical Lutheran St. Mark's Congregation Constance of the SELK is held there. The Serbian Orthodox community uses them for their liturgy.
