Sara Alexandra Rodrigues Cerdas , Sara Cerdas for short , (born March 23, 1989 in Funchal , Madeira ) is a Portuguese doctor and politician ( PS ). She won a mandate in the 2019 European elections and has been a member of the 9th European Parliament since then .

Life

Youth and education

Sara Cerdas was born on March 23, 1989 in Funchal on the Portuguese island of Madeira. After completing school, Cerdas first studied medicine at the University of Lisbon , followed by a master's degree and a doctorate in public health sciences at Stockholm University . In addition to her studies, Cerdas worked as an internist at the Almada-Seixal health unit and in the National Health Administration ( Direcção Geral de Saúde ).

Aside from her academic career, Cerdas did swimming as a competitive sport for the swimming club Clube Naval do Funchal . She won several regional and national medals, especially in butterfly and crawl .

Political career

In spring 2019, the Madeira Section of the Portuguese Socialists nominated Cerdas for the European election list, replacing Liliana Rodrigues, who had previously been elected via PS Madeira . Officially, the party stressed that it would be a question of carrying out a generation change and starting with a “fresh face”. The Election Commission of the Portuguese Socialists placed Cerdas in sixth place on the European elections list.

In the European elections, the PS won 33 percent and thus nine of the 21 mandates awarded in Portugal. With this, Cerdas also won her mandate and has been a member of the 9th European Parliament since then.
