George Breen

George Thomas Breen (born July 19, 1935 in Buffalo , New York , USA - † November 9, 2019 ) was an American swimmer and swimming coach.

Long-distance swimmer Breen, who only started competitive swimming at the age of 17, swam six world records . At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , he improved the world record in the 1500 m freestyle by 13 seconds. He swam this world record time in the run-up and could not repeat it in the final, so he only won bronze. He also won the bronze medal in the 400 m freestyle and won silver in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay of the Americans.

Breen was training at the State University of New York in Cortland under coach James Counsilman .

At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , he again won bronze in the 1500 m freestyle.

In the early 1960s, Breen began his long career as a swim coach. He coached Olympic medalists in the 1964 , 1968 and 1972 Games . From 1966 to 1982 he was the coach of the men's swimming team at Pennsylvania University .

George Breen was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1975.
