history
The Kentucky was laid down by Electric Boat in 1987 , launched in 1990, and entered service a year later.
The Kentucky's mission is to go on deterrent patrols with 24 ICBMs . During one such voyage, the Kentucky collided with a Los Angeles-class fighter submarine , the USS San Juan (SSN-751) on March 19, 1998 . At the time of the accident, the San Juan was submerged and the Kentucky was on the surface of the water. The front ballast tank of the San Juan was torn open, the Kentucky was not damaged, and no one was injured. Both boats drove under their own power to their bases, where they were examined. The home port of the USS Kentucky is Bangor / Washington .
On November 7, 2015, the submarine test-launched a Trident II intercontinental ballistic missile (without warhead) in the Pacific near California. The appearance of light in the night sky was observed by many people.
