The USS Maryland (SSBN-738) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy and belongs Ohio class at. As a Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear , it carries 24 ICBMs .
history
SSBN-738 was commissioned in 1986 and laid down in April that same year. The shipyard was Electric Boat in Groton , Connecticut . There the boat was completed and launched in August 1991. The ship was also christened, and the US state of Maryland was chosen as the namesake. After the final equipment and test drives, the Maryland could be put into service in June 1992.
Since then, the Maryland has been patrolling nuclear deterrence from her home port in Kings Bay , Georgia , but has also participated in military exercises, such as the 1997 Global Guardian .
