The USS Rhode Iceland (SSBN-740) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy and belongs Ohio class at. As a ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear (SSBN), it carries 24 ICBMs .
history
SSBN-740 was commissioned in 1988 and laid down in September that year. Boatyard was the Group for General Dynamics belonging Electric Boat in Groton , Connecticut . Construction was not completed until July 1993, the boat was launched and named after the US state of Rhode Island . Godmother was Mrs. Kati Machthley. Originally SSBN-730 was to be named after the state in New England, but the plan was changed just days before the baptism and the recently deceased US Senator Henry M. Jackson was chosen as the namesake.
In the year after the launch, the final equipment and shipyard test drives followed, on July 9, 1994 Rhode Island was officially put into service. The boat in the Atlantic fleet sails from Kings Bay , Georgia .
