The 33rd U-Flotilla (33rd Submarine Flotilla ) was a military association of the former German Navy during World War II .

history

The flotilla was set up in Flensburg - Kielseng in September 1944 under the command of Korvettenkapitän Georg Schewe as the last front flotilla of the Navy. After the loss of the northern French submarine bases , the submarines of the large submarine types were primarily assigned to this flotilla. The first submarine assigned to the flotilla was U 155 under Leutnant zur See Ludwig-Ferdinand von Friedeburg on August 15, 1944. The flotilla mainly used Type IX and Type XB submarines, but were also subordinate to Type VII submarines the flotilla as front or training boats. The U 234 and U 864 belong to the most famous submarines of the flotilla .

Some of the submarines in the flotilla operated with the Monsun group from bases in East Asia that had been occupied by the Japanese . a. located in Penang , Batavia , Singapore and Surabaja . These boats were subordinate to the naval attaché Paul Wenneker in Tokyo and, in all operational matters, to the submarine commander Karl Dönitz directly.

In contrast to other U-Flotillas of the Kriegsmarine, the 33rd U-Flotilla did not have a flotilla mark.

After the surrender , the flotilla was disbanded along with the other training and front flotillas.
