U 875 was atype IX D2 submarine , which wasintendedfor use in the Indian Ocean by the Kriegsmarine during World War II , but which no longer ran out due to the end of the war.
history
The construction contract went to the shipyard for the type IX D boats, Deschimag AG Weser in Bremen , as the thirtieth and penultimate unit of this type. The keel of this so-called trans-Atlantic boat was laid on May 11, 1943 with hull number 1083. After nine months and 15 days, the boat was launched and put into service on April 21, 1944 under Lieutenant Georg Preuss. Since the U 875 was intended for use in the Indian Ocean, the crew chose the cherry blossom symbol as the tower emblem . During the training trips, the boat was equipped with a 10.5 cm deck gun, two 2 cm twin flak and one 3.7 cm flak. In addition, the boat had the tower conversion II and a quick dive bake, i.e. H. a constriction of the upper deck for accelerated diving.
Whereabouts
Like many other boats of the Kriegsmarine that surrendered in Norway on May 9, 1945, U 875 was handed over to the Allies . It sailed on June 2, 1945, still under the command of Georg Preuss, from Bergen to the port of Londonderry in Lisahally , where it came in five days later. After the rest of the crew had been taken to a prisoner-of-war camp, the frigate HMS Cubitt towed the boat as part of Operation Deadlight on December 30, 1945 to the position 55 ° 41 'N - 08 ° 28' W and sank the next day at 12:47 a.m. Destroyer HMS Offa the boat.
