Synagogue in Wartenburg

The synagogue in Wartenburg ( Barczewo in Polish ), a town in the Polish Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship , was built in 1847. The profaned synagogue on Passenheimer Strasse is a protected monument .

The synagogue was preserved during the November pogroms in 1938 . From 1940 to 1945 prisoners from the Wartenburg prison were housed in the synagogue building. After 1945 it was used by the Polish administration as a residence for prison staff. After extensive renovation, the former synagogue now houses an art gallery.
