James Wilke Broderick (born March 7, 1927 in Charlestown , New Hampshire , † November 1, 1982 in New Haven , Connecticut ) was an American actor . He was the father of Matthew Broderick .

life and career

Since 1950 Broderick appeared in various US television productions in front of the camera, from the beginning of the 1960s he also worked more often in films. In Germany he was best known as the father of the family "Doug Lawrence" in the television series An American Family (shot 1976–1980, broadcast in the first program of ARD 1979–1981). This role also earned him a 1978 Emmy Award nomination .

Although the majority of his acting work has been television productions, including a few notable movies, including Arthur Penn's hippie flick Alice's Restaurant (1969) and as an FBI agent in Sidney Lumet's 1975 crime film Dog Days with Al Pacino . He often played authoritarian and sensible personalities, several times in his filmography he embodied police officers and doctors. He remained active as an actor until the year of his death. In addition to his film and television roles, he also worked in the theater, so he has appeared on Broadway several times since the early 1950s .

James Broderick was married to the author Patricia Broderick (1925-2003) from 1949 until his death. The couple had three children, including actor Matthew Broderick . James Broderick died of cancer in November 1982 at the age of 55.
