action

Lillian Roth is a Broadway singer who suffers from her dominant mother, Katie. After her fiancé David dies unexpectedly, she throws herself into affairs. She marries the drinking party-goer Wallie, and after the divorce turns to the seedy Tony, who beats her after the marriage. Marital problems drive Lillian into alcohol addiction. At an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting , she meets and falls in love with Burt McGuire, who turns out to be the right man for Lillian.

Reviews

"Just the snub-nosed face of Susan Hayward, dominated by the narrow joys and great desperation of drunkenness, which exactly mirrors all the steps in the alcohol-soaked descent of a singing star, saves the film from boredom."

"The film biography, shot from the artist's confession book, is authentic, shocking thanks to Susan Hayward's credible play and impressive as a warning against any kind of addiction."
