Shirley Booth , actually Thelma Marjorie Ford , (born August 30, 1898 in New York City , New York , † October 16, 1992 in North Chatham , Massachusetts ) was an American actress .

Life

Shirley Booth was primarily a stage actress. She made her Broadway debut in 1925 in the play Hell's Bells on the side of Humphrey Bogart . All in all, she played in numerous plays on Broadway until 1970, where she won the most important theater award, the Tony Award , three times (1949, 1950 and 1953). She could be heard on American radio in the 1940s as the sharp-tongued cashier at Duffy's Tavern .

She made her cinema debut in 1952 with the film Return, little Sheba . Director Daniel Mann first premiered this play by William Inge in 1950 with her in the lead role on Broadway and filmed it in 1952 with Burt Lancaster as her partner. For this first film role, she received an Oscar for best actress in 1953 and also a Golden Globe . Despite her great film success with Kehr zurück, little Sheba , she preferred the theater work and made only four other films afterwards.

In the 1960s, she was very successful on US television with the sitcom Hazel , in which she played a self-confident housekeeper of the same name. For her portrayal of Hazel she won the Emmy Award in 1962 and 1963 , and was nominated for this award two more times.

Shirley Booth married Ed Gardner in 1929, from whom she divorced in 1942. In 1943 she married William V. Baker and was widowed from 1951.
