Dominique Sanda (actually Dominique Marie-Françoise Renée Varaigne ; born March 11, 1948 in Paris ) is a French actress .

Sanda married at the age of 15 and divorced two years later; she worked as a model for a while. She made her film debut in a leading role in Robert Bresson's Dostoevsky film The Gentle (1969). She played a woman who fails in an attempt to break free from the conventions of Catholicism. Sanda gained international fame through the lead role of the bisexual lady Anna Quadri in Bernardo Bertolucci's Der große Errtum (1970). In the same year, the actress was cast by Vittorio de Sica for The Garden of the Finzi Contini . In 1976 she played the role of Ada in Bernardo Bertolucci's international epic 1900 (alongside Robert De Niro , Gérard Depardieu , Burt Lancaster , Donald Sutherland , Stefania Sandrelli , Alida Valli and others) and the role of Irene in Mauro Bolognini's The Legacy of Ferramonti , for which she received the Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1976 . Other successes were Nine in Crosshairs (1971), Beyond Good and Evil (1976) and Jacques Demy's A Room in the City (1982).

Dominique Sanda appears mostly in Italian-French film and television productions. On television she played a. a. the Inessa Armand in Damiano Damianis The train (1988). The thriller The purple rivers (2000) is one of her last major film successes .

Sanda has lived in Uruguay and Argentina since 1997.
