occupation

The Steppenwolf is a 1974 film drama . The international production is the literary film adaptation of the novel of the same name from 1927 by the Nobel Prize winner Hermann Hesse . The Swedish actor Max von Sydow can be seen in the lead role as Harry Haller .

action

Harry Haller suffers from his inner turmoil. He sees himself as a hybrid between humans and the metaphorical "steppenwolf" who does not want to adapt to the bourgeoisie and at the same time cultivates a relationship with classical literature and music. In order to end his mental suffering, Haller decides to take his own life on his 50th birthday. However, he meets Hermione beforehand , who “introduces” him to the supposedly flat world and confronts him with “normal”, bourgeois life. Harry Haller is initially skeptical, especially when he meets Hermione's friend Pablo, a jazz saxophonist, who seems superficial to him. However, slowly he learns from his acquaintances and adapts to them. Towards the end, Haller finds himself in a “magical theater” in which reality and illusion cannot be distinguished. After the apparently confusing experiences, he realizes that he has to take life with a sense of humor. This ends the film.

Reviews

The " San Francisco Chronicle " spoke of a "brilliant adaptation of the Hesse novel", the " Boston Globe " described the film as "beautiful, imaginative and enriching."

“A literary adaptation in the course of the Hermann Hesse renaissance in the 1970s, which mainly suffers from faithfulness to the word. Due to the faithful illustration of the text, the intellectual approach to the existential content of the book's original falls by the wayside. Even the dream images of the magical theater achieved by means of electronic color manipulation ", which are supposed to make Haller's visionary states tangible, no longer remain as theatrical backdrops. Even the good main actor can do nothing against the lack of dramaturgical concept."
