Sanal Edamaruku (* 1955 in Thodupuzha , Kerala ) is an Indian civil rights activist . He is the founder of Rationalist International and President of the Indian Rationalist Association . He is considered a committed atheist .

Life

Sanal Edamaruku is the son of Joseph Edamaruku . At the age of 15 he was already active in the International Rationalist Association and was later the editor of its house organ Modern Freethinker . He earned his 1997 Master in Political Science (Political Science) of the University of Kerala and later in International Studies of the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi . His writings deal critically with the superstitions that are widespread in India .

TV appearance

A TV appearance by Edamaruku in 2008 caused a sensation, in which he asked a tantric to kill him with magic. When this failed, the tantric suggested that Edamaruku was under the protection of a powerful god. Edamaruku then replied that he was an atheist .

Blasphemy investigation

In April 2012 Edamaruku announced that the Catholic Church in Mumbai had filed charges against him in several police stations for "violating religious feelings". Edamaruku had previously shown that the miracle of the Dripping Jesus in Mumbai was due to a leaking drainpipe.
